Over the past two decades, Dr. Karla Lombana has worn just about every hat in veterinary medicine, including mixed animal practitioner, practice owner, emergency clinician, equine veterinarian, researcher, educator, and academic director. While she may be an educator, Dr. Lombana admits she's a little addicted to clinical practice and still enjoys working relief (across species) whenever she can. She believes the best veterinary education happens when students can connect what they're learning to real patients, real clients, and real clinical decision-making. Her professional interests include veterinary education, equine medicine, anesthesia, pharmacology, diagnostic imaging, communication, wellness, and helping students bridge the gap between the online classroom and the realities of veterinary practice.
Originally from Utah, Dr. Lombana now calls Oregon home, where she lives with her husband, two energetic children, and some four-legged family members. She believes every stage of a career brings a new opportunity to grow, and these days she's focused on finding balance while continuing to contribute to the profession through education, leadership, and active clinical practice. Remaining connected to patient care is important to her—not only because she loves it, but because she believes the best educators should continue to experience the realities of veterinary medicine alongside the students they're preparing. Outside of work, you'll usually find her exploring the outdoors, trying to motivate her kids to get off of screens, cheering on the Green Bay Packers or tackling another home renovation project.
