Jen Serling Talks with Temple Grandin

Jennifer Serling, the Assistant Director of the Veterinary Technology Program, attended the Western Veterinary Conference this month in Las Vegas Nevada. This event is one of the largest veterinary conferences in the country and attracts veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and industry representatives from all over the world.  Ms. Serling was able to bring awareness to the veterinary community about the new App State program speaking to hundreds of attendees and exhibitors. One of the highlights of the conference was the world-renowned Dr. Temple Grandin.  Dr. Grandin is revered for her revolutionary changes to the production animal industry and low stress handling. Dr. Grandin has also given incredible and invaluable insight to living with an autism spectrum disorder.  Dr. Grandin gave several lectures at the conference on low stress handling in both livestock and small animals. She also presented with another icon in the veterinary community, Dr. Marty Becker, who is the mastermind behind the Fear Free movement. Dr. Grandin and Dr. Becker discussed ways veterinary clinics and professionals can implement low stress techniques in their practices. Ms. Serling was fortunate enough to attend these sessions and gain valuable information to which she can bring back to the students of App State.  Ms. Serling also was incredibly lucky to have one-on-one conversation time with both  Dr. Grandin and Dr. Becker!
