Seed Grants

Request for Proposals

The new Department of Rural Resilience and Innovation will offer Seed Grants to fund research or service-learning class collaborations up to $5,000. 

Innovation Challenges

The newest department in Appalachian State University’s College of Arts and Sciences welcomes proposals that incorporate a team (at least two individuals) and transdisciplinary approach to work on at least one of three grand innovation challenges that face rural American communities today and in the future: 

  1. Rural health and vitality; 
  2. Sustainable, resilient growth and continuity; 
  3. Rural-urban interdependence, agency, and shared knowledge.  

Proposals should include:

  • how the team will create/sustain mutual and beneficial partnerships with communities; 
  • show how their project could lead to larger scalable projects; 
  • and for those working with students, how the experience will provide educational transformations. 

Include budget justification with the proposal.

Requirements

Proposals should be no longer than five double-spaced pages and uploaded to the Info Ready Form [titled: RRI Seed Grants].

  • The Deadline for fall proposals is Friday, September 10, 2021
  • Award notifications will be made by September 15, 2021. 
  • Grant funds must be expended no later than May 15, 2022. 
  • A mandatory awardee team meeting will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021.

Teams may be made up of TT, NTTs, students, and/or community members, however, the PI must be a TT faculty member.

Deadline: Friday, September 10, 2021

Outcome Reports

Each team will be asked to submit a mid-year report (2-3 pages) due by Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, and give a 15-minute presentation about their work to the CAS Council at the May 2022 meeting.
